刚告一段落的暴雪，使伊利诺州、印第安纳州等多处城市降雪累积盈呎，部分民众享受白色世界之美同时，却有包括一名华裔在内的至少五位民众，在这波大雪中铲雪丧生，医师提醒，55岁以上或有心血管问题者，应避免铲雪。
位于芝加哥西郊的瑞柏市爱德华医院发言人哈特柏格(Keith Hartenberger )表示，2月9日上午，一位60岁的男性，因为在铲雪时心脏病发，虽紧急送医仍急救无效。
这位不幸丧生的男性，为住在瑞柏市的华人，熟识这位男子的亲友听到消息都十分震惊，一名亲友说，9日大雪，瑞柏地区大概积雪达8吋，如果住屋车道不铲雪的话，人车都很难进出，而郊区的房子大都有很长的车道，在酷寒的天气中铲雪，的确非常费力且危险。
其他四名铲雪死亡案例，均在印州的湖郡(Lake County)，根据国家气象局统计，湖郡的冠点市(Crown Point)降雪9.3吋，盖瑞(Gary)12吋，戴尔(Dyer)10.5吋。
湖郡法医佛瑞(Merrilee Frey)指出，从8日到10日间，当地有四名死者是因为铲雪致死。其中一位是51岁的冠点市女市民，她在8日晚间在家门口铲雪时死亡；另一位是住在南荷兰市(South Holland)的72岁男性，他是在9日在住家外用铲雪机铲雪时心脏病发，经送医后仍不治。
第三名铲雪死亡的案例，为67岁的盖瑞男性居民，湖郡第四个铲雪致死的案例，身份则还在进行确认。
佛瑞说，铲雪对于健康有状况者来说，是具有相当危险的动作。因为在寒冷的气候中铲雪，很容易使心脏肌肉处于压力下，引起血管收缩，他建议，有呼吸或心脏疾病者，不应该铲雪或使用铲雪机。
芝加哥罗许医学中心 (Rush Medical Center)的医师凯西(Paul Casey)说，55岁以上，或有心血管疾病者，都不建议铲雪，此外，平常缺乏运动者，也应避免铲雪，如要在冷天中到户外铲雪，出门前应做好热身准备，而且要穿着保暖衣物，铲雪过程中，一旦感到胸部疼痛、紧绷或灼热，或呼吸急促，都可能是心脏疾病发作或心脏血流量减少的征兆，如果出现这些症状时，务必请立即停止铲雪并尽快就
