一到秋天，住独立屋的家庭，就有的忙了，重要的一项工作就是扫树叶，这也是北美居住文化的一个重要特点。
秋季，树叶开始从碧绿转为金黄、嫣红，色彩缤纷，十分赏心悦目。但随着气候的逐渐转凉，晚秋的风每刮一次、雨每下一场，都会落叶无数。“满地黄花堆积”，看在多愁善感的女词人眼里，不禁生出“这次第，怎一个愁字了得”的万千感慨，留下千古名句;而对生活在北美的千千万万屋主、房客来说，“满地黄花”就意味着一年中最艰巨的庭院劳动又拉开了帷幕：清扫落叶。
到美国以前，曾听说过有些美国的中小学生时常会靠替邻居老人打扫院落 ，比如割草、扫落叶赚些零用钱。当时因为对割草、扫落叶没有感性的认识，听过也就当作耳边风。到了美国后，等到自己有了房子，有了院子，才体会到割草、扫落叶等是美国人的重要屋主文化之一。
根据美国人口普查局的最新统计，2012年新造的独立屋(single-family home)的土地面积，包括前后院、车库、车道、房屋建筑地基等为15634平方英尺(1平方米=10.764平方英尺，约合1452平方米)，虽然许多大城市房屋的院子没有这么大，但在中产阶层集中居住的郊外，一般的独立屋都有数百至上千平方米的院子，至于中小城镇及农村地区，房屋前后的院子更大。
房前屋后的院子基本上是草坪，周围往往是各种树木。以我们大华府周围的马里兰州及弗吉尼亚州来说，生态环境保护得很好，到处是数十米高的大树，居民区内树木林立、绵延不断。树木一多，到了秋天就落叶纷纷，而落在自家屋子前后左右的大量树叶，就是屋主或房客的责任，按时扫除。
扫落叶的基本方法是用专门扫落叶的犁耙或吹风机，将落在草坪上的树叶归拢到一起，然后装入专门的塑料袋内，在指定的时间放到家门前指定的地方，由垃圾公司运走。在这个过程中，将散落在几百平方米草坪上的落叶集中起来，再放入塑料袋的工作量很大，因为草坪上的落叶往往被草缠住，不像平地那样容易清除，扫起来很费力。扫一次落叶，需要用十几乃至几十个塑料袋来装，费时5、6个小时乃是家常便饭。这些天与同事们聊天，常会谈及扫落叶的话题，大家都抱怨周末的时间不少就花在扫落叶上了。
现在有些城市，为了方便居民扫落叶，特别设计了专门吸落叶的车辆，其工作原理与吸尘器一样，将落叶吸入车内，居民只要将落叶归拢到房前指定的地方就可以了，这样就省下了将落叶装入塑料袋的一道“工序”，既节省了时间，又节省了塑料袋，有利环保。
扫落叶虽然不是非做不可的事，大部分社区也没有明文规定一定要扫，但对于许多屋主或房客来说，已经成为约定俗成的规矩。可以毫不夸张地说，扫落叶是美国人房屋文化的一个重要特点，成为民众生活的组成部分。不过，也有一些人对扫落叶持有不同看法，他们认为落叶有沤肥的功能，对于树木、草坪是有好处的，扫落叶的唯一功能只不过是为了美观，却费时费力费钱。尽管有不同的看法，但从总体上看，扫落叶还是主流，因此，一到秋风扫落叶的时候，就可以看到房前屋后扫落叶的人，男女老少都有。
扫落叶是一项比较耗费体力的事，美国的老人常常与子女分开居住，对于老年屋主来说，每年一度的扫落叶就成为难办的事，虽然可以请人来扫，但价钱往往不低，扫一次落叶起码50美元打底，当然如果有邻居的青少年肯打工赚钱，价钱可能少些。因此，为了不再为扫落叶这类庭院劳动烦恼，许多老人往往就将独立屋卖掉，换个院子较小的连栋屋甚至没有院子的公寓楼居住，这也是美国的屋主文化特点之一，即老年人多会将独立屋卖掉，换个小房子住。（转载）
